Michael Thun, M.D. is a medical doctor and epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society. He is the Vice-President in charge of epidemiology and surveillance research. Dr. Thun is also a co-author of the National Cancer Institute’s Monograph 13 – Chapter 4.
Dr. Thun testified that the epidemiological data contains no evidence whatsoever of a harm reduction for Light cigarettes as compared to their regular counterparts. Dr. Thun also testified that Light cigarettes have contributed to the dramatic increase in adenocarcinoma (peripheral lung cancer) in this country. Dr. Thun also testified that there are additional negative health consequences from Light cigarettes including the potential for delayed cessation and increased initiation among smoking populations.
